- Explore how the condition is assessed, managed and monitored
This guide is designed to help you navigate the condition clearly and understand the importance of timely assessment and follow-up.
Papilledema Overview
Papilledema is swelling of the optic nerve head caused by increased pressure within the skull. The optic nerve connects the eye to the brain, and changes in intracranial pressure can directly affect its structure and function.
Because the optic nerve is part of the central nervous system, papilledema is not an isolated eye condition but a sign of an underlying process. The increased pressure is transmitted along the optic nerve, leading to swelling where the nerve enters the eye. This can interfere with the normal transmission of visual information.
In some cases, vision may remain unaffected in the early stages, even when swelling is present. As the condition persists, the sustained pressure can impact optic nerve function and lead to changes in vision.
Papilledema is clinically important because it may indicate conditions affecting the brain or surrounding structures. Identifying and understanding this sign is essential in guiding further investigation and appropriate care.
When to seek assesment
You should seek prompt assessment if you experience persistent headaches, changes in vision, episodes of blurred or dimmed vision, or any unexplained visual disturbances. Symptoms that worsen over time or occur alongside nausea or other neurological changes should be evaluated urgently.
If you are experiencing symptoms or have concerns about papilledema, schedule a consultation with Dr Cronjé Ophthalmologist & Eye Surgeon | FC Ophth (SA) | MBChB (Pret) | Dip Ophth (SA) for prompt evaluation and expert care.
