Understanding the Eyelids and Tear System
The eyelids and lacrimal (tear) system play an essential role in protecting the eye and maintaining a healthy ocular surface. The eyelids help spread tears evenly across the eye, while the lacrimal system produces and drains tears to keep the surface clean, lubricated, and free from debris.
When these structures do not function properly, it can affect both eye comfort and vision.
Overview of Eyelid and Lacrimal Disorders
Eyelid and lacrimal disorders represent a group of conditions that affect the structure, position, and function of the eyelids, as well as the production and drainage of tears. These conditions may involve inflammation, infection, blockage of tear ducts, or changes in eyelid position.
When the eyelids do not close or align properly, or when tear production and drainage are disrupted, the surface of the eye may become dry, irritated, or prone to infection. In some cases, excessive tearing can occur if tears are not draining normally.
These conditions can develop gradually or present more suddenly, depending on the underlying cause. Factors such as ageing, environmental exposure, infection, or underlying health conditions may contribute to their development.
Because these disorders affect the protective and lubricating systems of the eye, early assessment is important to manage symptoms effectively and prevent complications that could affect long-term eye health.
