What is the difference between traditional and laser-assisted cataracts surgery?

Traditional surgery uses manual instruments to remove the cataract, while laser-assisted surgery uses a femtosecond laser for added precision during certain steps.

Cataracts FAQ's

Table of Contents

Cataracts surgery can be performed using two main techniques: traditional manual surgery and laser-assisted surgery. Both methods aim to remove the eye’s cloudy natural lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), restoring clear vision.

Traditional Cataracts Surgery

In traditional cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), the surgeon uses handheld instruments to:

  • Create a small incision in the cornea
  • Manually open the lens capsule
  • Use ultrasound energy to break up the cataract
  • Remove the lens fragments with suction
  • Insert the IOL into the same location as the natural lens

This approach is time-tested, efficient, and widely used around the world. It typically takes less than 30 minutes and allows for a fast recovery with minimal discomfort.

Laser-Assisted Cataracts Surgery

Laser-assisted cataract surgery uses a femtosecond laser to perform certain steps of the procedure with computer-guided precision. This includes:

  • Creating corneal incisions
  • Making a more uniform opening in the lens capsule (capsulotomy)
  • Pre-softening the lens for easier removal

While the laser can improve accuracy in some cases, the entire process may take longer. This is because the patient must be precisely aligned under the laser device before surgery continues — requiring additional time for setup, imaging, and recalibration.

Final Thoughts

Both techniques are considered safe and effective. However, clinical studies show that outcomes in terms of vision and recovery are often similar, especially for patients with uncomplicated cataracts.

At Dr. Cronje’s practice, traditional cataract surgery is used exclusively, based on its reliability, efficiency, and strong track record in restoring vision safely.
