Not necessarily. While laser-assisted cataract surgery uses advanced technology to automate some surgical steps, clinical studies show that long-term outcomes are very similar to traditional cataract surgery — especially in routine, uncomplicated cases.
Laser-assisted surgery may offer more precision during certain steps, like creating the corneal incision or opening the lens capsule. However, this doesn’t always translate into better vision or fewer complications. The core goals of the procedure — removing the cloudy lens and implanting an intraocular lens (IOL) — remain the same in both methods.
Laser-assisted procedures also tend to take longer and are significantly more expensive. They involve additional equipment and pre-surgical imaging, which can increase surgical time without improving results for most patients.
At Dr. Cronje’s practice, only traditional cataract surgery is performed, based on its well-established safety record, efficiency, and consistent outcomes.
