The cause is unclear but it seems to be linked to genetics

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a type of refractive error in which the eye does not focus light evenly on the retina, resulting in blurred vision.

noun:

Astigmatism is a type of refractive error in which the eye does not focus light evenly on the retina, resulting in blurred vision.

It is caused by an irregularity in the shape of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. Astigmatism can occur in combination with other types of refractive error, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Refractive Error

What is Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a type of vision problem that occurs when the eye is not perfectly round. This causes light to bend incorrectly when it enters the eye, resulting in blurred vision. People with astigmatism may have trouble seeing objects both far away and up close.

The shape of the cornea or lens varies from person to person, and doctors don‘t know why. However, they do know that the risk of astigmatism is inherited. Also, people can get astigmatism from eye disease, eye injury, or surgery.

Wide Eye

Horizontal Astigmatism

Horizontal astigmatism is when your vision is blurry at both far and near distances in a horizontal direction. This can be caused by a number of factors, including an irregular shaped cornea, an incorrect prescription for your glasses or contact lenses, or a refractive error.

Tall Eye

Vertical Astigmatism

Vertical astigmatism is a type of astigmatism in which there is a difference in the refractive power in different meridians in the eye. This results in blurred or distorted vision. When the vertical meridian is affected it is known as vertical astigmatism.

Treatment Depends On Severity

Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery for astigmatism is a type of eye surgery that is used to correct vision problems that are caused by an irregularity in the shape of the eye. This surgery can be used to treat both nearsightedness and farsightedness, as well as various types of astigmatism.

Depending on your decision there are other treatment options available to help you live with astigmatism. This includes glasses and contact lenses that help your eye correctly focus light on your retina. Speak to your eye specialist today to discover which option is best for you.
